Recast Series #1
Artist: Greg Catron
Media: Handmade Felt; Wool, Silk, Flax
Description: The textile focuses on capturing the waste of contemporary textile making, specifically using wool nepps. These small tightly wound bundles of wool fiber are a byproduct of the wool carding process in the large-scale production of garments and other items. A dense dispersion of entrapped multi-color nepps evokes the scale of production within the textile & garment industry. Not unlike the pixels on a screen, the visual complexity of the composition offers a variety of experiences up-close and from afar inviting viewers to approach and engage with its materiality. As a tool for biophilia, this work can serve as a vessel for others to consider their own relationship with the natural world and the ways in which we manipulate it.
